The sea.....what is it?

I once read: "Man has come a long way toward accommodating the sea and for compensating for the hardships of dwelling either near or on it, but, it can never be trusted. The sea turns without regard for our humanity. That is its nature and it may never, no matter how much we feel we have tamed, befriended or become one with it, be trusted. The sea can never be tamed. When once we feel we have come to that place, we are not far from some doom."
I can only agree. Although I know how to swim, on my own I will not survive a sea-mishap. I am prone to having cramps. Of course if He does not want me to go yet, a driftwood could come along.
In parting, this I have to say about .....

THE SEA

The sea is many things to many
An immense desert
that puts the heart on edge
at every jolt and start.

A high mountain
that's capped with froth
that dashes man's hope,
his boat or both.

A moving mantle
that churns and turns
and stifles cries
with scorn.

A crystal mirror
where stars are captured
that makes some simple souls
enraptured.

A womb
or tomb -
pulsates with life
but engulfs some in gloom.

The sea indeed is many things
to every man on earth:
a playground, an arena
where man, a piece of dirt.
